Transformation – 2008
Yuri is an upcoming New Contemporary artist who recently graduated from the School of Visual Arts’ Illustration program.
Since he was 13 years old he’s been painting.
“Moody and thoughtful, his work explores his “inner conflicts and fluctuating surroundings” via series of paintings that are heavily planned out.” – http://www.creepmachine.com
About a year ago, Yuri joined forces put together an artist collective called Artillery that has been working with galleries in New York and Brooklyn to put up group shows.
As you will see above, each of Leonov’s works are part of a series; creating a rhythmic and dynamic composition is commonly the starting point of his process.
The symbolism contained within Leonov’s work tends to pull from art historical references ranging from ancient mythology to architecture, or simply by alluding to old master paintings.
Yuri Leonov has always been interested in the relationship between nature’s course and the constant attempts by human beings to influence it
He became much more immersed in the subject after being diagnosed with Crohnʼs disease, having been forced to deal with human limitations first hand.
His work has already been featured in a number of group shows, and was recently featured in The Visual Opinion magazine.
